Abstract: For the first time since its inception in 1947 the State of Food and Agriculture Report will be releasing two consecutive issues on a same theme – the hidden costs of our agrifood systems and how to address them. This is an effort on the part of FAO to build momentum for transforming food systems through the lens of true cost accounting. The 2023 SOFA report assesses environmental, social and health hidden costs and benefits of agrifood systems. It presents a first attempt at national-level assessments for 154 countries, suggesting that global hidden costs from agrifood systems amount to at least 10 trillion 2020 PPP dollars, representing nearly 10% of global GDP.  Health hidden costs from unhealthy dietary patterns are the largest contributor to total hidden costs, followed by environmental – largely due to nitrogen and GHG emissions – and social hidden costs from poverty and undernourishment. The estimates indicate that low-income countries bear the highest burden of the hidden costs of agrifood systems relative to national income. Despite the preliminary nature of these estimates, the analysis reveals the urgent need to factor hidden costs into decision-making for the transformation of agrifood systems. The presentation will first provide the results of SOFA 2023 and then describe the ongoing work for the SOFA 2024 report.
